Following a stay in Freetown Christiania (Copenhagen/Denmark) in summer 2008, the American stuntman, Evil Knievel, once again acknowledges, in his exhibition DARSANARAMA, one of his most important concerns: the spiritual reawakening of the American Dream. Motivated by his life story and experiences as an American icon, Knievel testifies to the spiritual aspect of this dream and speaks about the positive potential of his vision in the exhibition.
Evil Knievel has long been preoccupied with the ideal and transcendental facets of the American Dream. He relates his own purification to this dream and speaks openly about revelation. Particularly during his stay in Christiania for a three-week period of meditation, this quality presented itself to him and brought forth an entirely new side of his being. Evil Knievel sees himself as a new person toda
In contrast to his earlier, more physical endeavors, it is now the intellectual and spiritual challenges that have priority for Evil Knievel. His experiences have taught him: “Only with dreams and desires can we change our world: Since I was a young child I have been driven by the idea of being in the (lime) light. My dream was to be closer to light - not just physically but idealistically as well.” Evil Knievel's exhibition in the rooms of the OSRAM’s headquarters is an acknowledgement of this concern.
In addition to an extensive installation, which transforms the gallery into a meditative enclave of tranquility and release, a new edition of the fanzine, “Being Evil Knievel,” will be published as part of the exhibition: this will be presented to the public on 30 January 2009 when the exhibition closes.
Evil Knievel is one of the legendary heroes of our time. With his extremely dangerous jumps over cars and canyons, in which he frequently barely escaped death, he created the mythos of a superhuman hero. He regards himself as a “daredevil” and border crosser who is driven by the virtues of ambition and devotion. He is convinced that failure must be understood as an opportunity: “The people I want to listen to are those who take risk in their lives.”
In his white outfits decorated with red and blue appliqué, Evil Knievel stylized himself into the incarnation of America and embodied – not least because of this “white costume” – the symbol of success. Evil Knievel attracts attention and campaigns for serving great things, not just as a hero of the “thrill show” – a genre he popularized – but also as a citizen.
