Energy saving by retrofitting

The hall illumination of the philharmonics in Gasteig was fitted with special innovative luminaires in 2006. The main points of criticism were that the existing lighting system caused high energy costs and changing the lamps was very complicated and time-consuming, resulting in correspondingly high maintenance costs.

The lighting situation
The original luminaires equipped with 250W high-voltage halogen lamps were replaced with a more energy-efficient system. The continuously variable dimmability of between 0% and 100% had to be retained.

It was also important to simplify lamp change. The original luminaire is fitted with an E-27 socket. Due to its size, this lamp requires an suitably large reflector, which can only be installed on the top of the ceiling construction. The system is very inefficient. Due to the luminaire design, changing a lamp is very time-consuming. By choosing a smaller lamp a smaller and more efficient reflector can be used and built into the space in the ceiling construction.

The lighting concept
After analyzing the current situation, an alternative lighting concept was developed based on an innovative luminaire from OSRAM. For changing the lamps the lamp box could be locked and unlocked with a bayonet catch. This system means that the luminaire can be opened, fitted with a new lamp and ready to use again within a few seconds.
