Contract on patents:
Osram agrees royalty bearing cross-license with Lite-On
Osram GmbH, Munich, and Lite-On Technology Corp. Taipei, recently signed a patent cross-license contract. Osram has granted Lite-On a royalty bearing license to manufacture and sell surface mountable light emitting diodes (SMT LEDs) and white LEDs with conversion technology, for which Osram holds patents. Typical applications include backlighting for mobile phone and car radio displays.
SMT mounting forms are very small and allow for easy further processing in industrial series manufacturing. Osram holds patents for several mounting forms and packages for SMT LEDs.
Conversion technology for LEDs was developed by the Osram Opto Semiconductors subsidiary. It enables white LEDs to be produced using blue emitting InGaN (Indium Gallium Nitride) based chips and a suitable fluorescent converter.
"Over the years, we have built up a very strong position and have a good deal of intellectual property at our disposal" explains Dr. Rüdiger Mueller, CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors. The company had signed patent contracts with Nichia, Rohm and Everlight.
Lite-On has granted Osram a patent license for special manufacturing processes.
