Osram’s contribution to Luminale:
Powerball as an objet d’art
Luminale is the cultural programme that accompanies Light + Building in Frankfurt. This year, Osram’s contribution is the "Powerball inside" installation. This is an XXL version of the Powerball HCI metal halide lamp with a round ceramic discharge vessel.
Including the base, the lamp is a full two metres high and has a diameter of 30 centimetres. It comes in an exclusive design by the Stuttgart airbrush artist Uwe Wenzel. Using a combination of stencilling and freehand techniques he has sprayed the skyline of Frankfurt on the glass cylinder. The blue sky above the skyscrapers provides a free view of the round ceramic discharge vessel of the "Powerball" lamp. It shines in the sky like the moon. What you don’t see are RGB LEDs that bring the Powerball to life with a changing pattern of colours.
Uwe Wenzel (41) works as an airbrusher for a number of different companies, including Daimler Chrysler and BMW. He was also involved in the "Adam und Eva 2000" project at the Zeppelin Carré complex in Stuttgart where a total of 150 shop window dummies were used to create an original work of art.
The sculpture in light will be on show every day from 10 o’clock to midnight, April 18 to 22, in Frankfurt’s Zeil-Galerie shopping mall. It’s on the route of the ten Luminale shuttle buses sponsored by Osram.
