“Spirit of the Rainbow” fascinates football fans at Munich airport
The artist Sigi Bussinger sheds light on World Cup dreams
Summer storms around Munich airport produce wonderful rainbows but at the Munich Airport Center, the forum between the two terminals, there is a rainbow light that is keeping a succession of international football fans and visitors enthralled 24 hours a day.
In the shadow of the World Cup OSRAM lamps are allowing the “Spirit of the Rainbow” to shine forth. This unique light show by the Munich based artist Sigi Bussinger is captivating guests from all over the world and has now become the most popular motif for photos at this nodal point for the World Cup. Looking like a sparkling diamond with just a hint of an over-sized football, this sculpture lights up the area where football fans congregate in front of a big screen showing the World Cup action.
This work of art is almost four metres high. It has an outer skin made of a special prismatic membrane and revolving coloured foil inside that makes it radiate all the colours of the visible spectrum in a constantly changing pattern. From every angle you can see how the white light from the OSRAM lamps is split up into a wild dance of rainbow colours. Visitors are mesmerised by the “Spirit of the Rainbow”, losing themselves in their thoughts and “dreaming of their team lifting the trophy”. This is very much in keeping with Bussinger’s intentions. In producing this work of art, the renowned lighting designer was inspired by the myth of the rainbow snake that made various dreams come true.
For fans this could be the all-important insider tip for the crucial final week of the World Cup. They need to drive out to the airport, pray at the “Spirit of the Rainbow” and watch their team emerge victorious. OSRAM, the “official supplier of night-time lighting”, is lighting up World Cup dreams in Munich with this advertising concept.
Sigi Bussinger has already scored two goals at the 2006 World Cup in Munich alone. In addition to the enchanting football, there is another of his lighting sculptures on view near the World Cup arena. At the “FFF” exhibition held at the Mohr-Villa Freimann center, which is displaying works of art relating to football, anyone with an interest in modern art and football can view the “Ball Arena” until July 23. Sigi Bussinger created this together with Ivan Seiko from 1000 illuminated plastic bottles.
