OSRAM’S JOULE System passes endurance test at Le Mans 24 Hours
LED lighting system conquers the racing world
OSRAM provides innovative JOULE lighting systems to one of the most successful racing teams on the American motor sports scene via its North American subsidiary. The JOULE Signal System based on LED light sources is installed in all of the vehicles of the Pratt & Miller Engineering team and withstands both hard terrain and long races, such as recently in the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours race.

A demanding race such as the Le Mans 24 hours race places the highest demands on man and material. The course is also a tough test for the endurance of the drivers and the racing cars. This is why every one of Pratt & Miller’s cars is equipped with a JOULE Signal System. The system is not only able to withstand rough road conditions, it also functions perfectly under very high pressure. “Our JOULE lighting system with its LED light sources is a technologically advanced and innovative product. It also impresses with its long life”, says David Hulick, who is responsible for worldwide product marketing in OSRAM’s automotive division. “The fact that Pratt & Miller trust the product to hold its own under the most demanding racing conditions in the world speaks volumes for the reliability of the JOULE System”, continues David Hulick.
Combination of functionality and design
As well as the technical capability to withstand the tough conditions of a 24 hour race, the JOULE LED System of OSRAM offers designers unprecedented creative freedom for lighting. The JOULE System also consumes up to ten times less energy than traditional lighting systems with incandescent lamps and lasts longer than the life of a car.
A strong and reliable partner
The North American subsidiary of OSRAM has been supplying the Joule LED Signal System to the Pratt & Miller team since 2005 for its GT1 Corvette C6R, the Pontiac GXP and the Grand Am racing cars for the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Spa. “The JOULE lighting systems of OSRAM have so far been hugely reliable”, says Stewart Taylor, Head Engineer Electronics at Pratt & Miller Engineering. “Not one part of the JOULE lighting installed in our vehicles has ever failed and so far not one part of the equipment has had to be replaced.”
