MUNICH - Meetings in the Grand Chamber at the Munich Town Hall will no longer be held in a half-light, now that the lighting has been thoroughly updated with an additional lighting system. Low-voltage halogen lamps from Osram in energy-saving IRC design provide superb lighting conditions.

Modernisation of the lighting system has been completed without detracting from the impressive looks and ambience of the 120 year old Grand Chamber with its wood-panelled walls and decoratively carved coffered ceiling. The four ornate bronze chandeliers, previously the only source of light in the chamber, have also been retained in their full splendour. However, their total luminous intensity of just 60 lux has been given a massive boost. The installation of an additional 140 Nautilus spotlights from Interferenz Lichtsysteme GmbH has raised the lighting level in the chamber to a total of around 400 lux.

This is thanks primarily to the Halostar IRC pin-base halogen lamps from Osram, which provide high-quality light extremely economically. These small lamps are real energy savers. They operate on the principle of thermal recovery, in which the special IRC coating (Infra-Red Coating) on the bulb reflects heat back to the filament. This means that less energy has to be fed in from outside to maintain their operating temperature. IRC lamps therefore offer a luminous efficacy of 25 lumen per watt. This results in considerable energy savings of up to 33 percent compared with conventional halogen lamps. What’s more, their average life of 4000 hours is twice as high as that of standard lamps, which reduces maintenance costs.

Four spotlights were installed in each of the coffers in the ceiling. They are flush mounted so that none of the spotlight casings spoils the overall impression of the wooden ceiling. The openings have a diameter of just 35 mm. The new fittings can be switched and dimmed in two groups, an inner group and an outer group.
