FRANKFURT - Microelectronics and chip technology moved into the lighting sector some time ago. Osram has since taken full advantage in developing its energy-saving lamps. One after the other, special versions for different applications both indoors and outdoors have been developed and marketed.

Dulux EL Vario
The Dulux EL Vario from Osram is a lamp with a double life. The lamp operates on two levels. Users can therefore vary their lighting without having to forego the benefits of traditional energy-saving lamps. This is all made possible by the microchip integrated into the ECG.

The 23 W lamp provides full luminous flux when it is first switched on. This brightness can then be reduced to cosy energy-saving light by switching the lamp off and back on again within three seconds. This makes the lamp appear half as bright as before. In fact though, the luminous flux and energy consumption are reduced to considerably below 50% of their original levels. Power consumption is reduced to 9 W and luminous flux to around 30 percent. The programmed logic of the microchip recognises the switching status and reacts with the appropriate lighting level.

Even if the lamps is switched backwards and forwards between its settings there will be no adverse effect on its life. The Osram Dulux EL Vario can be switched any number of times straight from the box. A power boost circuit means that it achieves full brightness quicker than conventional energy-saving lamps.

Dulux EL Sensor plus
The Osram Dulux EL Sensor plus energy-saving lamp “knows” when it should switch itself on and off. And always at the right time - depending on the ambient brightness. The lamp is controlled by a freely programmable microprocessor.

Two sensors detect the infra-red radiation around the lamp that is emitted by the sun and also by other light sources such as incandescent lamps. This is then used to produce a measurement signal that is evaluated by the electronic circuits in the lamp. They then decide whether to switch the lamp on or off. To obtain accurate measurements the sensors need to be in the open and must not be either shaded or exposed to direct light from other light sources.

With a power rating of just 15 W, the Dulux EL Sensor plus from Osram produces the same brightness as an ordinary 75 W light bulb. Not only is this lamp very convenient and extremely economical for outdoor lighting, it has a security benefit. Because it switches on and off at different times depending on available daylight it gives the impression that the house is always occupied.

Dulux EL Facility
The Osram Dulux EL Facility is an energy-saving lamp that can be switched on and off any number of times without shortening its life. This unlimited switching capability is due to a special microchip in the integrated ECG. There is also a Powerboost circuit which enables the lamp to reach 90% of its full brightness within just 100 seconds.

This new Osram development is ideal for use in stairwells, in conjunction with motion detectors and in lighting systems controlled by automatic time switches. R&D specialists had facility managers very much in mind when they developed this lamp, which is why they named it "Facility".

There are two versions on the market, the 14 W lamp with triple-turn tubes and a luminous flux of 800 lumen and a 9 W version with double-turn tubes with a luminous flux of 500 lumen.

Plus points all round
Despite this specialisation, the three different energy-saving lamps have certain things in common. For example, they achieve energy savings of up to 80% compared with ordinary light bulbs. With a life of up to 12 years, assuming they burn on average for three hours a day, they will last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs. This is thanks in part to the integrated ECG, which also guarantees a high level of lighting comfort such as flicker-free starting and flicker-free light.

They all also have E14 or E27 screw bases so ordinary light bulbs can be replaced with energy-saving lamps in a matter of seconds.
