IRC halogen lamps from Osram:

A thrifty threesome

MUNICH - High-intensity light and greatly reduced power consumption compared with standard versions are the major benefits of low-pressure IRC halogen lamps from Osram. The Halospot AR 111 IRC recessed spotlight is the latest addition and forms an impressive threesome with the Decostar IRC and Halostar IRC.

Halospot AR 111 IRC is a recessed spotlight with an aluminium reflector and is approved for free-burning use in open luminaires in accordance with IEC 60598-1. There is a choice of three wattages: 35 W, 50 W and 65 W. On average, the new lamp will save 35 percent in electricity compared with corresponding standard lamps. Its colour temperature is 3000 kelvin, and it has an average life of 3000 hours.

The dimmable IRC halogen lamps are used primarily in professional applications such as retail outlets. Their brilliant light produces glittering effects and makes merchandise look so attractive. The light can be directed with pinpoint accuracy for precise spotlighting and effect lighting in shop interiors and shop windows. A UV filter is provided for improved protection against bleaching.

The quick way to assess the economy
The economy of IRC lamps is based on the principle of thermal recovery. A special infra-red coating (IRC) on the bulb reflects some of the heat back to the filament so this heat remains within the lamp. This means that less energy has to be supplied to keep the filament at its operating temperature.

A simple tool for calculating the energy savings is available on the internet at www.osram.com/osram_com/Tools_%26_Services/Calculators_and_Consultants/IRC_Energy_Saver.html. Simply enter the lamp type and the parameters relating to your lighting system and the tool will calculate your precise cost savings. It even takes into account the effect of the lamps on any air-conditioning systems.

Another benefit of these lamps is that on average they last twice as long as standard lamps. Luminous intensity and colour perception remain constant.

The new Halospot and the familiar Halostar lamps are now available from Osram only in IRC energy-saving versions. Halostar IRC is a pin-base lamp that is small in size but big on savings. As a point light source for free-burning applications it is brilliant as a ""starlight ceiling"" for example. It is available in 35 W, 50 W and 65 W models. Other benefits include a luminous efficacy of 26 lumen per watt, colour temperature of 3000 kelvin and an average life of 4000 hours.

The third of the three is the familiar Decostar 51 IRC dichroic reflector lamp. It is available in 20 W, 35 W and 50 W models. Its integrated shield enables it to be used in open luminaires. The colour temperature is 3100 kelvin. Its average life is given as 4000 hours.
