And the winner is… the environment

OSRAM wins red dot design award for new energy-saving lamp packaging

OSRAM has designed eco-friendly packaging for its energy-saving lamps and has been immediately rewarded with the renowned red dot design award. The developers made a conscious decision to do without PET (plastic) altogether. “Our idea was to offer an eco-friendly product such as the energy-saving lamp in eco-friendly packaging”, said Caroline Schliephake, responsible for Retail Marketing Europe at OSRAM.

The new OSRAM packaging is not only kind to the environment it will also help consumers make the right purchasing decisions. “When it comes to buying energy-saving lamps many consumers are unsure about the size they need, the brightness and whether the cap will fit in their existing fixtures. We wanted to help them by designing the packaging to suit the shape of the lamp and providing a large clear window”, said Sonja Elias, responsible for Corporate Design and Packaging Design at OSRAM.

The attractive design, created by the Lothar Böhm design agency in Hamburg, will also make it easier for consumers to find the right lamp to buy. Simple symbols on the front of the packaging show at a glance what the energy savings are, how long the lamp will last, its light color and its brightness. The packaging is open at the bottom so consumers can see the cap and check that the lamp works on an in-store tester without having to open the packaging. The differences between the various lamps can also be seen immediately.

The trade sector and the environment are also winners. “The fact that the packaging has been adapted to the shape of the lamp means that retailers can display up to 35% more lamps in the same space. There is now also the option of presenting the packaging either standing up or suspended”, said Christian Michel, a packaging development officer at OSRAM. Compared with previous plastic blister packs the new innovative designs result in less waste for disposal.

OSRAM was so pleased with the new packaging that it was entered immediately for the international red dot design award and – it may come as no surprise – it won in the Communication Design – Packaging Design category. OSRAM therefore joins the select group of winners of this red dot award for outstanding design quality which has been presented each year since 1955. The award ceremony will be held on December 3, 2008 in Essen. The design will also feature in the Winners’ Exhibition in the red dot design museum and also online in the Winners’ Online Exhibition.
